It’s officially been spring for almost 2 weeks, but moving on from March is closing the door on winter. March may not be all winter, but March, I believe, is considered by most to be a winter month. Other than this winter ending with a pandemic, it’s been a very mild winter. Perhaps the biggest snowfall here was our first snowfall of the winter, which came in November.
Today is a beautiful, clear, sunny, if a bit cool, day to start April.
I first arrived in the Niagara Region on a consulting assignment in mid-October 1987 and was struck by two Western New York phenomena. Every morning leaving my hotel I had to scrape the frost off my windshield, and I noticed an unusually large number of pick up trucks that had snow plows attached. And beyond that time, my older winter memories are of snowstorms, blowing snow and white out conditions, and white knuckle trips to and from work, and an arrival at the conclusion that I was not a particularly good winter driver.
Things seem to have eased quite significantly from those early days, but in this area you are always prepared that a snow storm can hit from October to April. Hopefully April will continue as it starts, on this beautiful sunny day, and ends both on a warm note and an easing of the social distancing measures that currently restricts us all.
